Is Ty Dolla $ign season finally underway? If so, the West Coast hyphenate is off to a strong start with his once-elusive single “Ego Death” featuring Kanye West, FKA Twigs, and Skrillex.
The mega-collaboration has an electro-hop feel to the track, as Ty leaps into desperation after losing out on his sweetheart “You murdered my ego when you walked away,” he warbles on the song’s chorus.
West, who released his new record “Wash Us in the Blood” less than 24 hours ago, returns with a spirited verse, bashing the Grammys, Super Bowl, and “halfway movements.” “Lotta people be thinking, but I’m just a sayer / all of us can’t perform at Super Bowl, but it’s OK for the players/ all these halfway movements need a whole lotta improvement/ everybody wanna talk, everybody wanna type, but nobody wanna do s–t,” he spews.
Later, Twigs makes her presence felt with her purring verse at the song’s finale.
Last year, Dolla $ign spoke on West’s influence on his upcoming album for his cover story with Spin. “I had a meeting one time with Kanye and played him the album,” Ty said. “He was like, ‘Bro, nah. You need to do what you do. Add more bass, add more drums, add more … the real sh*t, that’s what no one else is doing.’ That conversation definitely inspired me and made me go back and go crazy with the live instruments.”
As for “Ego Death,” Dolla $ign partnered up with Triller to create a 9D experience for the listener — the first-ever of its kind. With 9D, additional effects such as reverb come into play, allowing the music to give the sensation that it’s moving around in the headphones.
