With concerts still on hold, artists are looking for new and exciting ways to interact with their fans and bring their music to us any way they can.
The Weeknd has announced a new virtual concert and he is heading to TikTok and, no, it’s not for the viral #BlindingLightsChallenge (although who knows, he might surprise us!).
On Thursday (July 30), the chart-topping artist announced The Weeknd Experience set for Friday August 6 marking the social media platform’s first augmented-reality event.
“Something to look forward to finally,” one fan wrote on Instagram while another said, “Well, looks like it’s time for another bedroom concert 💃🏽 thank you for this! ❤️.”
Starting at 8:30pm ET/5:30 PT, the free event will be a unique immersive and interactive journey based around The Weeknd’s latest album, After Hours. It will also support the Equal Justice Initiative (an organization which works to end mass incarceration, excessive punishment, and racial inequality) with donations and TikTok will match the money raised.
TikTok has previously live streamed concerts on the app during a 48-hour music festival featuring over 35 artists but this will be the first time the app showcases an artist in AR! The Weeknd joins artists like John Legend and Travis Scott who have both also done AR-type concerts.
Like many artists, The Weeknd had to postpone his global After Hours Tour, which was originally slated to begin in June. The new dates are slated for June of 2021 starting in Canada before he heads to the US and Europe.
