It’s a good thing The Weeknd was wearing shades, because his latest performance involved some funhouse-level optical illusions and plenty of “Blinding Lights.”
On Friday (Dec. 6), the Canadian crooner brought a neon-lit cube with mirrored walls to the stage of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to sing through his brand new single. With an adrenaline-pumping beat and building synths, “Blinding Lights” embraces an ’80s vibe, the kind that and could easily soundtrack a pivotal scene in any vintage cult classic.
Filmed in black and white and from different perspectives on the stage, The Weeknd made the most of his mirror-cube before stepping outside of it to face the crowd. They sang the chorus of the track back to him, and some members of the audience raised mirrors of their own to flash The Weeknd’s glow right back on him.
“Blinding Lights” made for the second of his two-night preview of his new material on Colbert, as Thursday (Dec. 5) saw the live debut of “Heartless.”
