Lil Nas X helped close out the second day of EDC Las Vegas 2021 on Saturday (Oct. 23) with a surprise appearance during Diplo’s late-night set.
As Diplo’s hourlong set on the cosmicMEADOW stage came to a booming close, the DJ and producer brought out Lil Nas X to perform his hit tracks amid a fireworks and pyrotechnics display. Dressed in a Metallica cutoff midriff T-shirt and a knee-length kilt, the 22-year-old rapper hyped up the EDC crowd while singing along to his chart-toppers “Industry Baby,” “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Old Town Road.” For the latter song, Lil Nas fittingly threw on a black cowboy hat.
“Last night was fun,” Lil Nas X wrote on Instagram Sunday morning. The post included several photos of his outfit from the event, along with a shirtless video of the rapper goofing around on the piano.
This isn’t the first time Diplo and Lil Nas X have appeared onstage together at a music festival. In 2019, Diplo closed out Stagecoach in Indio, California, by unveiling a remix of “Old Town Road” featuring the rapper himself. Country star Billy Ray Cyrus, who appears on the song, also made a surprise cameo during the set. Of course, both Diplo and Cyrus were both featured in the cowboy-themed music video for “Old Town Road.”
“Old Town Road” went on to make chart history, logging a record-breaking 19 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming one of the biggest debut singles — and biggest singles in general — of all time. Lil Nas X has also notched No. 1 singles on the Hot 100 with “Industry Baby,” a collaboration with Jack Harlow, and “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).”
Lil Nas X’ debut album, Montero, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in late September.
