Angelina Jolie is speaking candidly about life since her high-profile divorce from Brad Pitt.
The mother of six disclosed how she can’t fulfill her desire to relocate abroad because Pitt maintains his home in Los Angeles and the distance wouldn’t be ideal for their children.
“I would love to live abroad and will do so as soon as my children are 18,” the Oscar-winning actress told Harper’s Bazaar. “Right now I’m having to base where their father chooses to live.”
The 44-year-old addressed how the couple’s split in 2016, as well as her preventative double mastectomy in 2013 have made the last few years exceptionally difficult.
“My body has been through a lot over the past decade, particularly the past four years, and I have both the visible and invisible scars to show for it,” she said. “The invisible ones are harder to wrestle with. Life takes many turns. Sometimes you get hurt, you see those you love in pain, and you can’t be as free and open as your spirit desires. It’s not new or old, but I do feel the blood returning to my body.”
Now coming through the other side of the divorce, Jolie is finally beginning to feel like herself, in part because of her children: Maddox, 18, Pax, 15, Zahara, 14, Shiloh, 13, Vivienne, 11, and Knox, 11.
“The part of us that is free, wild, open, curious can get shut down by life. By pain or by harm.” she reflected. “My children know my true self, and they have helped me to find it again and to embrace it. They have been through a lot. I learn from their strength.”
The “Maleficent” star also touched on how her kids have handled the couple’s divorce.
“We can’t prevent them from experiencing pain, heartache, physical pain, and loss,” she added. “But we can teach them to live better through it.”
Three years after their split, the former couple are still ironing out all the divorce proceedings.
Most recently, Jolie and Pitt were trying to figure out how to divide up the French chateau and winery they purchased in 2011.
