What a way to kick off the unofficial start of summer! BTS lit up Good Morning America‘s Summer Concert Series on Friday (May 28) with a virtual two-song performance. Displayed on giant screens in New York City’s Times Square, the award-winning group delivered their English-language hits “Dynamite” and “Butter.”
First up was their newest offering, “Butter,” which dropped on May 21. The global superstars — dressed in matching all-white outfits — performed on a sleek white set decorated only with a giant screen behind them that swirled with magenta and blue. The essentially bare stage allowed the focus to be on the septet’s impeccable choreography for the smooth number.
For their second song, BTS had a little bit more fun with the staging. They kicked off on the same stage, but this time, it was decorated as if they were at the beach at sunset, with the guys lounging on beach chairs, hammocks and under giant umbrellas, before later transforming into a desertscape, and back again. Even the choreography for “Dynamite” was more relaxed and fun, with RM showing off his running man at the end.
Ahead of their performance, the guys opened up to GMA about the success of “Butter,” which has already set new YouTube records. “It feels great to see people around the world enjoy it so much,” RM shared.
The hosts also asked the septet about the inspirations for their hit singles, and the group likely melted fans hearts with the answer: “Thinking of ARMY — that’s the biggest inspiration.”
Besides chatting about their music, RM also dished on what the guys did while quarantining together during the global pandemic. Among the activities the performers enjoyed besides working on their two English-language singles? Chowing down on some McDonald’s, watering plants, painting, and playing guitar. Explained RM, “We did everything!”
And BTS has continued to stay busy even as the world begins to open up again. Just this week, the group won all four awards they were finalists in at the Billboard Music Awards, where they also did the televised premiere performance of “Butter.” In addition, they launched their ‘BTS Meal’ with McDonald’s, had some fun with Stephen Colbert on A Late Show, appeared on Friends: The Reunion special, and dropped the “Butter (Hotter Remix)” hours ahead of their GMA performance.
