Paramore’s Hayley Williams performed a moving cover of Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” with her hair wrapped up in a towel for Jack Antonoff’s 7th annual Ally Coalition Talent Show on Monday night (Dec. 21). Williams was moodily lit with an effect that bathed her face in a slowly morphing shadow of green, blue, pink and red light during her appearance at the distanced all-star event, her voice setting a mood that perfectly matched the spooky vibe of the 1998 slow-burn anthem from the legendary British trip-hop act.
Seated in what looked like a candlelit bedroom and accompanied by a pulsing, ragged beat, Williams swayed back and forth as she sang the haunting lyrics, “Water is my eye/ Most faithful mirror/ Fearless on my breath/ Teardrop on the fire/ Of a confession/ Fearless on my breath/ Most faithful mirror.”
Monday night’s show, streamed on Antonoff’s Twitch account, also featured Lana Del Rey, Clairo, Brittany Howard, Shamir, Maggie Rogers, St. Vincent, Wallows, Tierra Whack, Spoon, Muna, Andrew Dost, Laud, The Chicks, Big Red Machine, Sleater-Kinney, Reggie Watts, Mike Birbiglia and others, with the musical acts mostly doing unique covers. According to Antonoff, the show raised around $350,000 for homeless LGBTQ+ youth.
