Run the Jewels anticipated album RTJ 4 has arrived earlier than expected. Originally slated for Friday (June 5), the 11-track collection features appearances from Pharrell, 2 Chainz, DJ Premier, and more.
“F–k it, why wait? The world is invested with bullsh-t, so here’s something raw to listen to while you deal with it all,” the group said in a statement Wednesday (June 3) regarding their surprise release. “We hope it brings you some joy. Stay safe and hopeful out there and thank you for giving 2 friends the chance to be heard and do what they love. With sincere love and gratitude, Jamie and Mike.”
El-P doubled down on the group’s statement by posting the following on Instagram: “it’s here. its our hearts, humor, anger+love of hip hop music. we hope it moves you, makes you smile, makes you dance, makes you think, and makes you nod your head. ❤️❤️❤️ ❤️UPDATE: aaaaand the site is crashed. while we work to bring it back up for anyone who wants the free download it is also available on all streaming platforms to hear. ❤️
The album is available for free downloads now, but RTJ is encouraging fans to add a donation to the National Lawyers Guild Mass Defense Fund. Shortly after announcing that the streaming version of album had arrived, El-P shared that after 45 minutes, fans had already donated more than $10,000 to charity.
Physical copies of the album will be available in September.
Last week, Killer Mike gave an impassioned speech after the death of George Floyd sparked outrage in the African American community. The MC was tearful as he pleaded with Atlanta residents to not destroy their city, and instead, to think of ways to “plot, plan, strategize, organize and mobilize” for significant change.”
