Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s collaboration “See You Again” already has a bittersweet backstory, but it earned another emotional layer when they performed their duet at the first Los Angeles Lakers game since the death of Kobe Bryant.
Originally penned for 2015’s Furious 7 soundtrack, “See You Again” was written for the late Fast and the Furious star Paul Walker, who died before filming completed on the seventh installment of his wildly popular action series. The song has always been a tribute, and it was a fitting choice for the halftime show at the Staples Center on Friday night (Jan. 31) as the Lakers played against the Portland Trailblazers in their first game back after losing one of their legends.
Wearing a jacket emblazoned with the team’s logo and Nike sneakers in the Lakers’ colors of purple and gold, Khalifa was stoic as he and Puth, sat nearby at a piano at half court, eased slowly into a stripped-down arrangement of the song. Images of Bryant scrolled on the screens throughout the arena, which erupted into heartelt cheers when Khalifa closed with a poignant send-off: “We love you, Kobe.”
