If you ever needed proof that Americans like one song and one song only, you only need look at DJ Earworm’s annual end-of-year multi-hit mash-up. The “United State of Pop” mix has become the producer’s calling card, having gone viral with his first edition in 2009. Today, he wraps up both this year and the decade, a United State of Pop for 2019 and for the 2010s overall.
The 2019 version, nicknamed “Run Away,” blends vocals from Lizzo, Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish, Ed Sheeran and more over the instantly-recognizable and uplifting melody of Panic! At The Disco’s “High Hopes.” It’s wild how Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendez’ “Senorita” melts perfectly with Chris Brown and Drake’s “No Guidance,” but that’s not where the fun ends.
We have to take time to remember where we’ve been this decade, and DJ Earworm’s “Decade of Pop” weaves 100 hits into just less than three minutes. Kesha, Adelle, Miley Cyrus, Avicii, Drake, The Chainsmokers, The Weeknd and more blip by in a freakin’ funky instant, and there’s even more eye candy in the visual.
But just because this decade is over doesn’t mean DJ Earworm is going away.
“I’m in it for the long haul,” Roseman is quoted in an interview with Time. “I’ve gone through some peaks and some valleys. But there’s something to be said for persistence, and for not quitting even though the pendulum swings. I know mash-ups were at a cultural peak right around the turn of last decade. I know they’re not as buzzworthy now. But I think they’re a form that’s here to stay and will be relevant.”
